being an artist

Comes with pros and cons. (I’m a graphic artist/designer.)

I love being able to help out businesses/people regarding branding, advertisements, packaging, layouts, photo editing, drawing, creating ideas, creating unique personalized gifts, helping you when you have a fashion crisis, flyers, illustration, doing my little sister’s school project/assignments, making designs for the church..etc. which is pretty neat!

But there are also times that I hate being one.

Like when people expect you to work for free. *No, I don’t work for free. I have bills to pay too, just like you. Do you work for free?* Or when they ask you to create a design and end up bossing you around to do what they want and create a ridiculous design then blame you for the awful design. *Have you forgotten that I just created what you want?!* Or when people think that artwork is not work. Or when people expect you to churn out the artwork right after giving you the details to the last minute because it is already needed. *I need time to create!*  Or when people say, Woah you charge that much?! It looks so damn easy! *Yeah right, save yourself the trouble and do it yourself then!* Can you do my (event) invitations for free? I can get you in for free! *seriously, I am not interested in your event* My son/daughter is just insert age here 10 and below and is a really good artist just like you. *facepalm* Design for us for free and it will be good word of mouth advertising for you. *WTF?!* Create a poster for me then gives me a lot of crappy, small sized photos and tells me to Photoshop it, then when told that those photos cannot be used, they get angry at you and tells you that you cant do Photoshop. *tableflip*

Exactly how I feel. People who does graphic design for a living will find this funny.

Exactly how I feel. People who does graphic design for a living will find this funny. (form the internet)

And usually all I can say/do to those people described above is just to politely smile and shrug of whatever they just said. *But in my mind, I just high fived their face while shouting aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhh! like a Spartan*

I also found a list of why you should and should not date a graphic designer from the internet and found it hilarious! I tweaked it and made my version.

The real lists can be found here:  Do not date a graphic designer & Date a graphic designer.

*We can still add more to the list. Let me know what you would like to add.

But, with great power comes great responsibility. It is awesome being an Artist.

3.) Jergens original scent lotion that was given to me by my math tutor months ago. I recently decided to try it out.  I had patches of very dry skin on my arms and legs, the lotion did work its magic! I’m back to normal!

4.) A short chit-chat with my perpetually busy lovely cousin. Yesterday.

5.) The new micro usb cable in pink (given by Kei) for my phone.

weird peeling-s

My facial skin looks similar to this right now.

photo taken from the internet

Went to see my derma again and got a (glycolic) peel two days ago and the dead skin is still not coming off. I look tan on some areas and fair on some areas.

But it is fine with me. I have this weird obsession of picking/peeling the dead skin off! even if I was instructed not to. I feel so accomplished when I peel of a large patch. I’m weird, I know.

So far the discolorations caused by past blemishes has lightened a bit. Yey!

Cant  wait for the new skin to emerge!

feb 16 is our valentine date for 2014

A Sunday! Right after church and fellowship, Kei brought me to Buenisimo for a late lunch.

Buenisimo. Muy bien!

Buenisimo. Muy bien!

Kei really planned for this! I was ecstatic! We had the whole place to ourselves! We arrived at around 2pm. Really late for lunch and too early for merienda.

But its ok since the wait staff’s only focus was us. Nice! The staff are really helpful and friendly too! One of the wait staff even volunteered to take a photo of us.

While waiting for the food, we sort of looked around their restaurant.

we did not get to explore much… because the food is ready! That was fast!

We are given complimentary bread with balsamic vinaigrette .

Followed by Caesar salad.

Beautiful presentation! I was encouraged to eat veggies… even if I don’t really like veggies.

And our all time favorite paella!

And done. Thank you buenisimo! We then headed out to the neighboring restaurant lola, to get desserts.

Yes, that is right. Lola same as the filipino/tagalog word for Grandma.

The whole place is modern, and cozy. reminds me of all the stuff I see in pinterest! And back to dessert.

We had a banoffee pie to share.

We ended up finishing it in less than 10 mins. hahahaha! loved that it was not too sweet, perfect!

While on the topic of Valentine’s day. I would also like to share what Kei gave me as valentine gift this year.

strawberry basket!

a strawberry basket!

Which is unique as well as practical. Everything on the basket are stuff I like! Strawberries are my favorite fruit. I sort of collect owls, a anime drawing of me and my lovely pet rabbits, a magnet reminder for forgetful me, a fan, chocolate and three red roses. The best thing about it,he didn’t have to go to Dangwa (flower capital of manila) and jostle with the crowd for overpriced flowers that would wilt. No overspending for us! yey! *He said the whole gift costs exactly 1000 php.  Awesome and creative!

For those interested in the restaurants, here are the details.

Buenisimoby Café Ysabel is located at 24 Scout Tuazon St. corner Scout Lozano, Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon City

happy valentine’s day!

happy valentine’s day everyone!

I am off to celebrate the day with my lovely Grandma! Plus, the family…as always.

My valentine date with Kei will be moved to the weekend. Because I think it would be a bad idea to join the rush/splurge for valentine’s when we can get a better deal on a less “peak day for dates”.  Besides heavily packed/noisy restaurants are not exactly a romantic place. *Just being practical here.*

and lastly a friendly reminder,

Gifts of love need not be expensive, just heart-felt.

language of flowers or chocolates

Valentine’s day is only a week away! I joined in the mad rush to purchase a lot of chocolates enough to devour and make my teeth hurt to give to my friends for that special day.

Also got my Mum a slab of dark chocolates without nuts, fillings or fruits. Just plain dark chocolate or chocolate truffles *she loves those*, why she likes plain ones are a mystery to me because I like my chocolates with almonds, hazelnuts, pistachio, cashews and macadamia. *I dislike the plain peanut*

I used to loathe Valentines day. My parents who are 100% unsweetened never celebrated the occasion. My friend’s parents (our neighbors) celebrate the occasion, with their dads bringing home flowers, stuffed toys, chocolates to their moms. While their mom cooks up family favorites for the day. I usually felt jealous for my own mum. Why is my dad like that? I do my darn best to make a nice card for my mum every time that day comes around. At home that day is just an ordinary day. Still, I wished that my mum would get something nice for valentines day.

By the time I got my allowance *that was way back grade 5 for 20 php a week*, I remember saving it up the week before the dreaded Valentines’s day. I would then make sure to get my mum a single rose *from the vendor outside the school gate* and a bar of cheap milk chocolate *from the pushcart vendor who sells candies and stuff also outside the school gates*, before I went home from school. *that time a rose costs 10php per piece and a chocolate bar would be around 20php* I would get all giddy and happy to wait for my mum to arrive home. In my own way I am trying to make that dreaded day a bit better. My mum usually smiles and says thanks with a pat on my head. That makes my day.

As the years passed by my allowance got a bit bigger, so I can now afford to get my mum better chocolates, and more flowers too.

I also “ambush” my Dad on the stairs with the flowers and chocolates now to make it look like it was him who got my mum the sweet stuff. *My Mum and Dad always come home together, Dad being the one who gets up the stairs first, and Mum taking stops in between the floors, usually my sister and I waits on the stairs and run to our dad the moment we see him and let him hold the stuff, he would be surprised and frozen in place till my mum catches up and sees him with the sweet stuff.* And we would all be happy. My sister and I still continue this tradition every year.

I also loathed valentine’s day mainly because I am born envious, was homely, loner, uncool, stupid high schooler I never got anything for that day. *like mother, like daughter. I guess?*

All the pretty, popular, cool girls at school have a paper bag full of loot! Poor me. I have to buy my own chocolates. Never mind the flowers they will wilt anyway. *lols. bitter much?!*  My best friend did not get any too, we are on the same boat.  So, Me and my best friend created a pact that we would never let each other experience a lonely valentine. I buy her a single flower and her preferred chocolate and give that to her when she gets home. She also does the same for me. This went on till we were college.

Then along college, I got my first ever flowers and chocolates on that dreaded day!

A single red rose and some fancy chocolates. I was euphoric! *Never mind that I don’t really like the poor bloke that gave me those stuff… I dated him anyway. For a few months.* Apparently Red Roses mean: love, respect, courage, passion well done, congratulations.

Then I got a bunch of pink roses and chocolates from my then boyfriend. It was nothing fancy since we are both students with a small allowance but I appreciated the effort. And I have to admit that it is a huge ego boost!!! *This went on for four years, till we called it quits. He also gave me peach colored ones.*

Pink roses mean: Happiness, Elegance, Romance, Admiration, Sweetness, Thank You

Then another Valentine’s day came a new guy. He was a close friend of mine, He gave me a single yellow rose with a box of expensive chocolates.

Yellow roses mean: Friendship, Caring, Welcome or Welcome Back, Joy

Then came Kei (Current).  Of all, he is the most out of the box.

The first one I received from him is a single pink one.

Next is a bouquet of mixed blooms, then a single purple tulip… I wonder what will be next.

Hard to decode this one… so, far I recall the mixed blooms have 3 pieces of coral roses that means: Desire, Enthusiasm, Happiness.

A clump of Chrysanthemums: perfection.

Purple tulip means: royalty.

*I also cannot recall the chocolates he gave. No impact. Max Fail*

He doesn’t have a “signature” color or flower unlike the others…

*or maybe he just based them from the budget he has at the momentmajor penny pincher this one.*

the irony of my pale skin

I am still having bouts of breakouts. So my dermatologist treated me with SSpeel or yellow peel, then after a week back to cleaning/pricking… and was told to take Afaxin 25000 iu.

So far I have been successful in taking one every night, save for yesterday.  (I’m still sticking to the clindamycin toner and erythromycin gel routine, day and night.)

So far so good. The “seeds” of the pimples are removed now but, I still have those pesky red marks on my skin though. The dermatologist said it was because I have a pale skin that makes all the redness obvious. *sigh* While most of the people here in the Philippines would kill to get fair-er, I want to get a bit darker (to hide my blemishes). Oh, the irony.

Anyway, I found this on the internet and thought this is a nice to share.

Looking at the chart, I believe I am seriously lacking in vitamin C, K and Folate.

*must remember to take Ascorbic acid too…*
