my random ramblings

language of flowers or chocolates

Valentine’s day is only a week away! I joined in the mad rush to purchase a lot of chocolates enough to devour and make my teeth hurt to give to my friends for that special day.

Also got my Mum a slab of dark chocolates without nuts, fillings or fruits. Just plain dark chocolate or chocolate truffles *she loves those*, why she likes plain ones are a mystery to me because I like my chocolates with almonds, hazelnuts, pistachio, cashews and macadamia. *I dislike the plain peanut*

I used to loathe Valentines day. My parents who are 100% unsweetened never celebrated the occasion. My friend’s parents (our neighbors) celebrate the occasion, with their dads bringing home flowers, stuffed toys, chocolates to their moms. While their mom cooks up family favorites for the day. I usually felt jealous for my own mum. Why is my dad like that? I do my darn best to make a nice card for my mum every time that day comes around. At home that day is just an ordinary day. Still, I wished that my mum would get something nice for valentines day.

By the time I got my allowance *that was way back grade 5 for 20 php a week*, I remember saving it up the week before the dreaded Valentines’s day. I would then make sure to get my mum a single rose *from the vendor outside the school gate* and a bar of cheap milk chocolate *from the pushcart vendor who sells candies and stuff also outside the school gates*, before I went home from school. *that time a rose costs 10php per piece and a chocolate bar would be around 20php* I would get all giddy and happy to wait for my mum to arrive home. In my own way I am trying to make that dreaded day a bit better. My mum usually smiles and says thanks with a pat on my head. That makes my day.

As the years passed by my allowance got a bit bigger, so I can now afford to get my mum better chocolates, and more flowers too.

I also “ambush” my Dad on the stairs with the flowers and chocolates now to make it look like it was him who got my mum the sweet stuff. *My Mum and Dad always come home together, Dad being the one who gets up the stairs first, and Mum taking stops in between the floors, usually my sister and I waits on the stairs and run to our dad the moment we see him and let him hold the stuff, he would be surprised and frozen in place till my mum catches up and sees him with the sweet stuff.* And we would all be happy. My sister and I still continue this tradition every year.

I also loathed valentine’s day mainly because I am born envious, was homely, loner, uncool, stupid high schooler I never got anything for that day. *like mother, like daughter. I guess?*

All the pretty, popular, cool girls at school have a paper bag full of loot! Poor me. I have to buy my own chocolates. Never mind the flowers they will wilt anyway. *lols. bitter much?!*  My best friend did not get any too, we are on the same boat.  So, Me and my best friend created a pact that we would never let each other experience a lonely valentine. I buy her a single flower and her preferred chocolate and give that to her when she gets home. She also does the same for me. This went on till we were college.

Then along college, I got my first ever flowers and chocolates on that dreaded day!

A single red rose and some fancy chocolates. I was euphoric! *Never mind that I don’t really like the poor bloke that gave me those stuff… I dated him anyway. For a few months.* Apparently Red Roses mean: love, respect, courage, passion well done, congratulations.

Then I got a bunch of pink roses and chocolates from my then boyfriend. It was nothing fancy since we are both students with a small allowance but I appreciated the effort. And I have to admit that it is a huge ego boost!!! *This went on for four years, till we called it quits. He also gave me peach colored ones.*

Then came Kei (Current).  Of all, he is the most out of the box.

The first one I received from him is a single pink one.

Next is a bouquet of mixed blooms, then a single purple tulip… I wonder what will be next.

Hard to decode this one… so, far I recall the mixed blooms have 3 pieces of coral roses that means: Desire, Enthusiasm, Happiness.

A clump of Chrysanthemums: perfection.

Purple tulip means: royalty.

*I also cannot recall the chocolates he gave. No impact. Max Fail*

He doesn’t have a “signature” color or flower unlike the others…

*or maybe he just based them from the budget he has at the momentmajor penny pincher this one.*
