makeup for a nervous meet up experience…

I wrote this post because: someone might need it. To save a clueless one like me from committing the same makeup mistake I made.

Last weekend, I was invited to attend a wedding. And it was not the usual wedding where I am friends/family with the couple. This time I got invited to one of Kei’s family gatherings. His Cousin’s wedding. That means his whole family with the relatives. I am going to see them for the first time.

That got me into panic mode… how do I do my make up? I remember having that I doubt everything about myself feeling when I am to meet Kei’s family for the first time. Kind of feels like going to a job interview and getting all sorts of emotion/s fluttering like crazy on the pit of my stomach. That all I wanted to do is run!

No matter how I feign confidence, my knees are a tangled, quivering jelly. I don’t think anyone actually likes this kind of feeling. I would like to look good, but still looking every bit like myself.

*I made the mistake of looking too “done” when I met Kei’s parents for the first time. My mum was not really keen on make-up so, I kind of overdid all those tutorials from Youtube and Kei’s family’s reaction was: that girl looks so high maintenance and prissy! (I did a smoky cat eye complete with falsies with glossy lips for a dinner out. I even did my nails!) Oops. Oh well, better overdressed than under dressed was my motto that night. Fail.

Because first impressions must last?

Being with the parents/family of your other half is going to be the new normal. If you are piling on the makeup, dressing up every time you see them but don’t normally do on a daily basis. Talk about pressure… it is tiring and exhausting. Maybe you can keep this for a while but, sooner or later they are going to see you as yourself without the glamour. So stop pretending and be yourself. This is for life yo!

So, how the hell do I look presentable and be myself while impressing the family at the same time you ask?

Ask questions about who you are going to meet – Get to know what type of people are they? Do they go out a lot? Do they prefer to stay at home? Are they the nature/outdoorsy type of family? Or maybe they tend to lean on the conservative side?

Where are you going to meet? Time of the meeting?- Is it at their house? At a restaurant? Event? Daytime? Lunch/brunch? Dinner?

After knowing what type of group the ones you are going to meet falls into, the better you can plan your outfit and makeup look. They key is look like you are part of their group. That way they would envision you with them.

Do I forgo what I like to blend in with them? –Say you like wearing smoky make up and bright lip colors, but the ones you are meeting up leans toward the conservative side. Go for natural makeup? Possible. But you can still inject your signature look, just keep it appropriate for the occasion. (ex: a dinner-smoky eyes with muted lip, brunch-light lids and bright lips)

Wear what makes you happy. You will be much more comfortable at being yourself when you are happy.

No major change- So you got worried about meeting his family that you went to the salon and had your hair chopped and now you don’t feel like yourself? Or colored your hair that is not totally something you like? Again, do not do something drastic. Stick to what you have right now, because you are well adapted to it already. Any major change=major adjustment. Adjustment=Uneasy + Uncomfortable meeting with new people = Not a very good feeling.

Simple is actually a smart move- As much we love over the top make up looks, now is not the time to go for it. Meeting future-in-laws is not the occasion to look like a drag queen. Let them focus on you and what you say and do more than what you wore and what is in your face. When nervousness strikes, it also shows on your make up application! Hello squiggly lines caused by shaky hands! So when feeling nervous, go simple.

What exactly is simple? For me it has to be good skin, just pinched cheeks, neutral eyes, and muted lip. Basically a no makeup, make up kind of look. I can add eyeliner and eye shadow if needed. It is fool proof! For the hair, keep it combed and neat.

For the simpletons like me: the routine of just patting baby powder on the face will not do. You have to do your own make up to look better and a polished version of yourself.

These are the basic stuff I go for in creating my simple face.

These are my weapon of choice in the dreaded meet the parents episode

These are my weapon of choice for a meet up makeup look.

For the face after a quick splash of cold water, I apply The Face Shop HD perfect BB cream. This actually hides my freckles and acne scars. Without needing a concealer! Next, I use Clio pen liner in Kill Black for the winged eye liner look and use MAC engraved for my waterline to make my eye bigger. Both those products stay put!

After all that a light dusting of baby powder to ward of the oily shine on my face and a swipe of “nude” lips.

Meeting new people is a adjustment, more so meeting your future in laws! It can be uncomfortable, but it is an exciting moment as well. They are also getting to meet you and get to know you!

all spritzed up

I sprayed my last drop/spritz of sweet pea a while ago.

Last week it was the cucumber and green tea, two weeks before that romantic wish and pure seduction sprayed their last cloud of mist.

Dove body mist in Cucumber and green tea, Victoria's Secret body mist in Pure seduction, Victoria's Secret body mist in Romantic Wish and Bath and Body Works in Sweet Pea

Leaving me with empty bottles on my perfume tray, nonetheless I am pretty pleased.

I was surprised that I managed to go through all those bottles. When before I never really emptied a bottle, it usually gets passed on. I also did not buy any new body mists for this year! Maybe I am growing up now.

So, I have no “everyday scents” for now. That gives me the go-signal to try out new ones.

But, I have my eye on these:

( Just in case I find it in Cash and Carry, and with the condition that it agrees with the budget.)

( Just in case I find it in Cash and Carry, and with the condition that it agrees with the budget.)

  • Victoria’s Secret Angel Gold– The fragrance invites you to take the stage, steal the spotlight and to make every day runway-worthy. It is a sexy blend of sparkling bergamot, lush gardenia and musk.
  • Bath and Body Works Endless Weekend– An exhilarating blend of raspberry, lychee sorbet, sun-kissed magnolia and vanilla sandalwood
  • Bath and Body Works Mad About You – A love-struck pairing of soft peonies & black currant kissed with creamy vanilla musk

Will probably repurchase this:

  • Victoria’s Secret Pure Seduction– A flirty, floral fragrance. Entice in Pure Seduction, a passionate romance of succulent red plum and sweet freesia. Experience the luxury of fragrance. Refreshing formula is infused with conditioning aloe vera and calming chamomile.

*As much as I love the Dove body mist in Cucumber and Green tea for its scent and price, I cannot find it anymore in the supermarket.

Any good supermarket body mist/colognes you can recommend? =)

-Enjoy the weekend!

much, much darker than expected a review: L’oreal Paris Excellence Fashion Hair Dye In 6.35 Intense Copper Brown

beforeI have half-half hair. I meant half brown, half black. My roots are on full show.

See photo on the right.  I don’t really like it, I mean who wants ugly roots showing?

Been dying my hair for years now and my goal is always a evenly toned medium to light brown hair. For most of the time, I dye myself using a box of hair dye. It is convenient that way.

Not to mention doing my hair at home is loads cheaper too!

So, I went out to look for a new hair color! And spotted the L’Oréal booth (in Sm department  store at Makati) that offers free application upon purchase of their boxed hair dyes! I hurriedly went to ask how to avail the free application. Then I go choose hair dyes. Sadly, there are not much to choose from, but eh… choosy pa ba ako?! Go na lang ng go!

*my mum’s go to brand for hair dye is loreal.  So I decided to try it out too.

And since I am a huge sucker for beautiful packaging, the new boxes got my attention. The time I arrived (lunch time), there are only two colors from their new collection. Intense copper brown and Violet brown. I picked the intense copper brown thinking that it will be lighter, thus showing up better on my dark hair.

I went to buy one box of Intense copper brown then went back to get another one.

I usually use one box of hair dye, but since I am trying to grow my hair longer I have to use two now. >_<

this photo was taken at home. after I got my hair done, I took home one of the box.

This photo was taken at home. After I got my hair done, I took home one of my two boxes. Of course the tube of color is now used up, so this is a slightly incomplete set.

Opening the box you will get to see the standard set: tube of colorant, color developer, instruction leaflet with gloves, hair serum, and the after color conditioner.

Cutting to the chase, I waited in line for my hair color application, after I filled up a survey form.

There were a lot of ladies waiting in line!!!

Then it was my turn.

the process

looking like a egghead is part of the process of getting my hair done! lols!

Quickly hopped on the chair and let the Loreal trained staff do her magic on my hair. I used up two boxes of the product! They did a good job in sectioning my hair and applying the product thickly.

*Hindi nila tinipid, talagang sinimot ang two boxes!

Of course the dye smelled a bit strong, but it did not sting at all! The product felt creamy. The light colored mixture of colorant + cream developer turned out darker and darker as the time progressed. Once my hair was covered with the hair dye, I have to wait for 45 mins for the color to develop before rinsing.

While rinsing, the staff asked me what color did I use. I told him that I got the new 6.35 Intense Copper Brown. He gasped and said out loud that he was worried. Honestly, I am worried too. Apparently the color I picked does not really show up on dark haired people, they got complaints about it.  Sad-ness.

Looks like I made the wrong move.

This was the result of the wait.

it was dark. real darker than what i expected.

It was dark. Real darker than what I expected. It looks like my natural hair color.

So, I went home to gauge the reaction of the family… My parents took one look at me and said: o, bumalik ka na sa tunay na buhok mo?! (You went back to your natural hair color?!)

Yeah, I look like I did not color my hair at all. The color only shows up on Intense light (pun intended).

The next morning after I took a bath, I quickly checked my hair again.

the final color

the final color

Got the box and looked at my hair again, and again and tried to take a photo under the bright indoor light.

Real dark, way dark. I really wanted to like this product but I was let down. I might consider getting my hair dyed after resting it for a month or two. I personally felt more comfortable with lighter hair.

Bottom line: I think Loreal hair dyes is made for those who wanted to cover grey/white hairs.  For the mature set. Or those looking for a dark hair dye after getting bleached blond hair. This would work really well. I also liked that after getting my hair dyed with Loreal it did not become dry, instead it appears to have improved the condition of my hair.

*The L’oreal Paris Excellence Fashion Hair Dye booth can be found in SM Department Store in Makati. The free application service will be available till July 23, 2015. See their facebook page for more of their promos.

**All my reviews, opinions, and other stuff expressed here are my own and based on my own experience with the product. This is not a sponsored post, I paid for this (from) my own pocket. *Price? I got one box for 495php. Since I got two boxes i paid 990php.

what can I get you?

Hey, what do you want as your wedding gift? This question gets me to a tizzy in an instant.

I have blank on my mind. Nada. Nothing.

I was asked this question by my cousin Jackie from the US, just a few days ago. And all that was swimming in my mind was… I need to complete my prenup outfits, my deadline (work) is due, I kind of need to buy make up for the prenup shoot.

So, what do I want for the wedding? Again I am drawing up a blank.

I think I mentioned it a few posts ago… I lost my make-up a few months ago, so I really need it. That qualifies for a wedding gift right?

I told her I need makeup, specifically eye shadow. She laughed. In a most grown up sister voice she said, what you need for your new life, not makeup.

But, I’m still going to give you makeup if you like makeup.

the sought after Urban Decay Naked Smoky

The sought after Urban Decay Naked Smoky

I am such a kid. Sigh. She ordered the Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette for me. I was smiling ear to ear like a cheshire cat.

She then proceeded to send me links for home products, like a fragrance diffuser. While I like it very much, Kei’s sinus will hate me for it. For the love of Kei I declined.

Next, she sent a link to a Keurig 2.0 coffee machine. Wow. My cousin got exquisite taste is stuff…

my eyes just bugged out

My eyes pretty much  just bugged out.

She knows Kei and I both are huge coffee drinkers.

I told her that it was a very much super screaming jump for joy yes! She also told me that she will be sending us Corelle plates.

Of course, Atchie Jackie picked these striking beauties. -Corelle Bandahani

The plates look festive! They scream holiday/special occasion to me.

She really does have an eye for stuff maybe it runs in the family? hahahaha!  Seriously pretty stuff they got there…

I then went to look for kcups here in the Philippines. Then I panicked… only a few stores sell Keurig’s kcups. And those stores are far from our place.

As much as I want the Keurig for its design, I have to change it to something more practical for us. The only cups available at the supermarkets here are Nescafe’s Dolce Gusto.

So, I asked her if we could change the coffee maker to Nescafe’s Dolce Gusto. Because we can buy the capsules in the more supermarkets! She seemed weirded out by my request but said yes. In the US most households use Keurig.

this is practical

this looks like a penguin! but this is practical.

Since my cousin is fancy, she picked out the Nescafe De’Longhi Dolce Gusto Genio -is an automatic compact coffee machine that would be perfect for our starter home. I can has a penguin coffee machine! I already nicknamed it penguin!

They also sell the Dolce Gusto Genio coffee maker in the Philippines, just without the De’Longhi brand.  De’Longhi is an Italian small appliance manufacturer based in Treviso, Italy.

waterlogged

I type this with my rain soaked shoes, it is typhoon season again in the Philippines. The super hassle wet season.

Spent the past few days buried under a pile of work, so it is only now that I have the time to blog.

I have also pretty much given up on going RTW for the rest of my prenup gowns. I went about different department stores to look at their gowns but sadly, most of them have garterized back/s that I hate, so it’s a nay.

I do however found a shop that sell gowns that look pretty.

Case in point: Bellabianca. I really liked one of their gowns. (The one named chandler.) But they don’t have the color I like (pink) in my size.  So, I ended up fitting the (mint green) gown in my size (small). The other small size is grey, the color makes me look drab. So no thanks.

almost, but not quite

almost, but not quite

I find it pretty and a bit “elsa”-ish. (Elsa from frozen) Thanks to the blizzard beading and its color.

As you can see even the small gown does not fit… It still needs alterations and I am not about to plunk down more for alterations. Sorry.

So, I have to face the fact that I need to go back to a mananahi. To customize the fabric, size and color I like. I also took a trip to Carolina’s at Glorietta to look for beads and fabric.

This time, I bought 5 packs of crystal ab flatback sew on jewel beads. I love sparkly stuff.

And contemplating on buying fabric (that I like),  give it to the seamstress to get a gown made.

This is the pretty fabric that caught my attention.

thanks for holding the fabric Kei.

thanks for holding the fabric Kei.

I do not know what this is called. All I know is that the fabric is pretty!

All the more wanted to get a pink gown made. Sigh.
