travesty all over

Happy to report that I have been “healthy” eating a lot since I got market greens from Baguio.

I have made strawberry shrimp salad. Aka Pammy approved salad-that means its not exactly that healthy since I used quite a lot of butter on the shrimp.

I also made Sagada orange salad from Jo’s Sagada oranges.

Also cooked deep fried oyster mushrooms! -This is so yums! (obviously not healthy.)

After finishing off all the Baguio greens we got, it is time for CNY (Chinese New Year). Of course it is not CNY if we are not pigging out. *I am always pigging out.

And because it is not a family gathering without family drama, I had loads and loads of drama. I think I had enough for a year, or five years even. That makes me very wary paranoid of family gatherings. Being made to feel inadequate by someone who turns out to be a hypocrite -is something that I could definitely do without. Maybe next year I will go hermit.

But not all is dour. My geraniums from Baguio that I thought would never thrive in Manila actually bloomed quite a lot even after subjecting it to stress due to travelling! -It adapted well to the warmer climate.

My "stars and stripes" geranium from Baguio. My bestie Jo also got these.

For now I will be seeking refuge from my tiny patio garden. Till the next post.

acquired tea

While I am not a huge tea drinker, I do enjoy having a cup of tea from time to time.

I enjoy it more as a dessert or as a scent!

I am particularly enjoying the Elizabeth Arden Green Tea scent spray that was given to me as a gift. It has a crisp, clean scent that is fresh and soothing.

Photo taken the day I got the bottle. – I am halfway through it right now. If only the scent stays for longer.

On “eating” tea – I have a particular favorite.  Matcha – the ground green tea powder.

I had it as a hot/cold drinks, ice cream and the numerous KitKats I used to get as a pasalubong (souvenir) whenever someone goes to japan. I was just drawn to the color of it and the uniqueness. In time I have grown to like it enough to get me to “hunt” for matcha. It is an acquired taste.

Later on Matcha KitKat can be found in most supermarkets here (in the Philippines). That made me happy and my personal rule is if can find it in the supermarket, one or more is sure to end up in my cart. *Its usually more than one and I also get the dark KitKats, to stock up at home.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this at a store near our place. -I am not exactly sure if this is new or limited time only (I haven’t seen it at the place where I do my groceries)…but I am happy to see them!

happy to have found these!

happy to have found these!

We now have Matcha KitKat ice cream (locally)! That is kind of like a 3 in 1 of my favorite sweets. -I like the taste of this ice cream but I find that it melts quickly.

Nice and sweet! -But in true matcha style; not overtly so. Kudos to Nestle Philippines for making matcha available locally!

How we spent labor weekend: aka our Gay-bordate shopping weekend

So, most people we know are off to Boracay to spend the labor day weekend. Being true blue city-girl-mall-rats….my best friend and me have decided that labor day will be dedicated to hunting items from our Christmas wish list (last year 2014) but with the premise of getting the said stuff on sale or discount.

So, Joanna wanted a Marc Jacobs Henry Skeleton Watch, I was looking for Miss Dior EDP preferably the 100ml bottle. Those were the specific item we are hunting for. Since both items are pricey. We looked at every possible option to obtain them for cheaper. (That means we spent the past few months, going to Rustans, Cash and carry, Shangri-la and even looking for it online.) Till this weekend. It was do or die. We are going to wing it.

This is going to be a girly shopping day. Hence, Gay-bor date.

With Kei in tow, off we go to Cash and Carry to look for the Miss Dior edp. I asked store after store to no avail.

close but not really the one. sorry.

close but not really the one. sorry.

Started with Bescost (they only have the old miss dior originale with the full houndstooth patterened bottle see top left photo), then to Criseldas’s (that only has the miss dior blooming bouquet variant see top right photo), Tia Loleng’s ( no miss dior here), till I saw it at Anselka’s! A 100ml bottle with the gold/amber liquid! Was grinning with excitement.

hollo lovely!

hello lovely!

I hurriedly dragged Jo to Anselka’s and showed her the bottle. Checked it for authenticity and went on to get the loot. Mad happy really.

Next, we went to meet Jo’s Dad and he drove us/treated us to a sumptuous lunch at Tim Ho Wan. That porkbun was melt in the mouth yums! Lunch was so awesome we finished lunch in less than an hour. I also learned a few Cantonese phrases over lunch. Also added a new food fave  – Lo mai gai. That my friends, is steamed glutinous rice in lotus leaf.

So after lunch our group went to meet our childhood friend Geordan, plus his parents. Chatted up a bit and it was time for them to go. Jo’s dad also went home.  With only the three of us are walking around Glorietta, Kei and I went to introduce Adora to Joanna. She loved the place! She is familiar with the bags! And proceeded to give me a crash course on bag appreciation. Fancy stuff. After the bags, I got her to try Penhaligon’s scents. After a few sniffs on the testers, she ended up liking what I liked best – Empressa. We like patchouli. Hahaha!

Then looked at the watches on display. Little did I know, the watch Jo likes was on display! And an added bonus, on sale.

finally found you.

finally found you.

She has been looking for it for a while now. Her initial pick was the rose gold version of the Marc Jacobs Henry Skeleton watch, but seeing this lovely gold version made her change her mind. Few more minutes waiting for it to get adjusted, Joanna got her loot! With a gift with purchase sticky note pad! Score!

So we went to have a afternoon coffee to escape the summer heat.

Then proceeded to take outfit of the day pictures. Sun dresses are the in thing for the day!

Come dinner, we get Joanna to try one of our fave food haunt Kitchitora. We both got Paitan ramen sets. So that she gets to sample the different appetizers.

Kei got tsukemen as expected. Here is our whole spread.

Joanna loved the place and the food! Good one Kitchitora!

After dinner we chatted a bit then its time to go home. To cap it all off here is our loot for the day.

our loot for the day

*Much thanks to Kei for accompanying us, being the photographer for the day and helping us find our stuff! Our only regret is we did not take picture with Joanna’s dad and Geordan plus his parents. Next time… Overall it is a good day for shopping.

Next day was Saturday. It was a normal work day for me. And also did all my grooming rounds. By that I mean going to the dermatologist and dentist. Kei prepared his presentation for church tomorrow. We spent the day at home watching big bang theory and eating chickenjoy,  heaps of palabok + Chinese take out dinner,  all of which are drowned with buko juice. We are cool like that. hahaha!

Sunday was a Yes and No day. YES that Kei pulled off the church activity he planned perfectly. All is well till Pacquiao lost. That was the NO. Bummer.

We ran off to the mall again, where else?! hahaha! the afternoon was spent on retail therapy. We tried Old Navy as we heard that they make good looking comfy-casual clothes and that their pant/s selection is good! Meaning they carry a wide range of pant sizes! So, Kei tried on pants and I tried on dresses.

Here are the ones I tried on. From left to right: White eyelet dress (no xs size so not for me), the middle and right are the same design, only the middle is a swiss dot design and the right one is in stripes. All my picks are 100% cotton fabric. I hate polyester.

all pretty!

all pretty! photos taken from old navy

He got two pants one in denim and another in khaki. I got two dresses. The swiss dot and the stripe. After that we doused our hot temper in iced macchiato and went back to grab our new found fave porkbuns. Then ate a lot again for dinner.

this is

this helped us feel better. but our wallet does not feel better. lols.

This sums up our weekend. We eat and shop.

How did you spend you labor weekend?

How I spent my last valentine as a single

I kept the days leading to valentines busy. (Not only at work.) I sourced/created/assembled my bridesmaids kits. It includes a letter, our love story, color palette, their roles, details on the day, and  something sparkly-earrings/something sweet-chocolate covered biscuit/something pretty-face mask for the bridesmaids.

*This is not usually done in the Philippines. We got the idea from the US, as some brides assemble kits for their bridesmaids. I decided to make my girls kits to inform them of the wedding details and place a smile on their faces.

ready to be assembled kits!

To give you a better view of all the paper inside… I customized everything! Save for the huge pink box. Those are store brought.

Gave my bridesmaids the boxes and they all loved it! *I am happy! All the effort was worth it!*

On the course of the week I also managed to do some catching up with all the lovely people in my life.

valentine week

valentine week

I had a lovely Fri-date with my best friend Joanna (we call each other Lupet). Finally watched a movie (that thing called tadhana) with my workmate.  Had dinner with the family and got a lot of sweet (valentine) gifts!

But, not everything is rosy. My eye infection is back again, diagnosed on Feb 9 and is currently under medication until (hopefully) next week.  So I’m wearing my glasses (nerd mode) the whole time!

And as always, Kei and I spent the Valentine’s day late. We celebrated it on the 15th. Kei took me out for dinner at 22 Prime. (Wow! I know! Too bad I don’t have decent photos as the place was dim. )

Photo taken from 22 Prime's Facebook

For all the troubles valentine brings, I made sure Kei also got something.

Kei's TMNT Donatello

Kei’s TMNT Donatello

I got him a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Donatello toy. Very unique right? hahahaha!

*The toy was his childhood frustration. He wanted a Donatello toy,  and told his dad he wanted the purple one. But for some reason his dad mistakenly got him a TMNT villain (kalaban) toy! That made him very sad!

So, that was my week.

My last valentine as a single. ❤

Cure for the blues: Bunny Baker Café and cake studio

We had a really bad week. How bad? Kei got mugged on his way to work. I have a nitpicking client that seems to want more and more freebies. Our weekend plans were cancelled, the red gown I had made turned out to be blue. To top it all off the rain has to pour.

Cue music: Why does it always rain on me? by Travis that would be my anthem for 2014.

But we got an invite from our friends (Kenzei and Aila) café and cake studio soft opening. We had that going for us which is nice.

So we braved the drizzly morning to be greeted by this.

cuteness!

cheery cute!

We are welcomed and seated on really cute pink bunny chairs! That was designed and customized specially for bunny baker! Their interiors is really cheerful, cozy and very well thought of, I really liked the stars on the ceiling. It reminds me of glow in the dark stickers.

Upon closer look on their display, they have different flavors of really cute cupcakes and gelato!

But not to forget, the Bunny baker is well-known for their very detailed and whimsical fondant cake creations.

kids cakes

Those cakes are created by the (bunny baker owners) husband and wife team, Aila (wife) doing the cakes and Kenzei (husband) in charge of sculpting the fondant. What started out as a hobby, and then turned into a home operation is now a cake shop. They also do wedding cakes, cupcakes, macarons and set-up for events.

See the level of detail on this pink Chinese lion fondant cake?

Awesome right?

While I was busy taking pictures, Kei took the liberty of ordering a light lunch. We got creamy pesto pasta, spam fries and ceasar salad. For drinks we have pink lemonade.

We love the creamy pesto and fought for the last piece of spam fries! It’s good.

For dessert I got a royal blush cupcake (red velvet with nutella frosting) and Kei got a scoop of okinawa (milk tea flavored) gelato.

sweets

Despite the continuous rain outside, we left the place feeling brighter.

Thanks for having us over Kenzei & Aila! We will be back soon!

the three-zero, Kei’s #epicthiry

Kei and I attended Christian and Beya’s wedding last Oct 26, 2014. Despite all the rush, long distance and time constraints we thought they had a nice wedding.

us being wedding guests

That got me thinking/sort of worrying for when it is our turn. What would our wedding be like?

And the day after we attended the wedding, Kei celebrated a milestone in his life. He turned 30.

I was very much excited! Much more than Kei himself who doesn’t usually celebrate his birthdays. (His family is not big on birthdays.) So, I made some teasers for his #epicthirty based on BBC’s Sherlock Holmes series that he likes. In hopes that he will be anticipating his birthday, not dreading the day he turns three-zero!

And because I wanted the day to be special, I crafted a “Man Bouquet” (male counterpart of a flower bouquet) for him! It turned out pretty awesome! The mix included Chivas Regal, Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker and ferrero rocher chocolates.

Kei's Man Bouquet - the mix includes chocolates and liquor. I must say I’m awesome at creating this!

I also planned a whole day of activities for him. (I always do.) This time around I came up with a English/Sherlock / Jack Daniel’s label as design inspiration. He had a manly barberdashery experience, a European lunch, afternoon tea and Steak and oysters for dinner. To make it personalized, I custom made a placemat for him with the activities listed on it.

He had a grand time. He is now thirty and happy. Mission accomplished for me. I am happy too.

October is done. With that I leave you with a Happy Halloween y’all!

omakase

So, we got creamed by typhoon Mario, to lift up our sunken spirits we are looking for our comfort food/s. Specifically something Japanese.

It is no secret that Kei and I are huge fans of Japanese cuisine.

The food haunt I am about to share is also no secret. In fact it is very famous for its makimono.

I am talking about Omakase. This restaurant has a huge following and you have to wait to be served. But, we don’t mind.

We have kept frequenting the place.

10532371_10152178501437967_4449023864169747838_n

Omakase (お任せ o-makase?) is a Japanese phrase that means “I’ll leave it to you”. (It is rooted from the Japanese “to entrust” (任せる makaseru?)). Usually used at Sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef.  Ordering omakase can be a gamble; however, the customer typically receives the highest-quality fish in stock at a less expensive cost than if it had been ordered à la carte. (Learned all about that from Wikipedia)

Omakase’s Makimono is not exactly authentic as they put their own twist to it. It would be safe to say that they serve Japanese fusion cuisine. For this restaurant, We would happily say “omakase” and  leave the selection to them!  But we have our favorites of course.

Here is a peek of their choices of their famous makimono.

this will give you a hard time choosing what you like to order.

this will give you a hard time choosing what you like to order.

We really took time to look at their selections as we liked most of them!

Their interiors are minimalist inspired and accented by cute kokeshi dolls.

We usually arrive here to get lunch, so there is a lot of people and we can’t really take a lot of photos. Sorry.

On the next, we had a chicken bento, zigzag roll ( Softshell crab, tempura with Japanese-mayo-chili oil dressing) , gyoza and their omakase soup (wakame, kani, eggdrop soup).

round two

*I just realized we never got desserts here because we tend to over-eat!

Eating here definitely brightened our day! Comfort food indeed.
