wipeout

We in Manila can breathe a sigh of relief that tropical storm Mangkhut (Ompong) Typhoon is already over. With its powerful winds and sudden rushes of rain, causing havoc to the city traffic and flooding on some areas, it is quite frightening to think of how our situation is going to be if we were in the direct path of the storm.

Some of our friends are not so lucky. We have a friend who has an agriculture business up in Baguio. He is in Manila to get married. The good thing is that he is getting married in Manila, therefore safer than when he is in Baguio. The wedding went well.  The bad is after the wedding, there will be the aftermath of the storm on his crops and a ton of cleanup work waiting for him back home. There is also the matter of lost income.

Meanwhile it is given that all our produce will be marked twice the price due to scarcity. Canned food will be the usual food up until we get new crops from local farms or get fresh imports.

We all have encountered typhoon and all but lately the sudden births of super typhoons are alarming. I believe the phenomenon has a lot to do with global warming. There are also earthquakes and storm surge to worry about each time there is a typhoon. It’s a scary time we are living in.

break is over

So it’s back to reality for us all as the summer break was over. I find it a bit sad that the summer break has gone by so fast…time sure goes by fast when you are having fun.

I spent some time with family and siblings. Went to an old swimming place, and also Kei and I had gone on a staycation at the hotel that we are most familiar with-AG New World hotel. I spent afternoons on the pool, so it was a good thing that I got some swimsuits.

Though we did not really plan ahead for the summer break, it ended up well. It was probably one of the most restful summer break I had.

After the staycation, we went to the mall because Kei wanted to see a movie, it was a toss up between Pacific Rim and Ready Player One. He ended up picking Ready Player One and it was a good one!

It made me think about the what ifs –since we have (a relatively new and crude) virtual reality now-that will surely improve over the years, crypto currencies, and same as the movie… there are lesser and lesser greeneries/gardens and more highly populated urban cities, many people chose to avoid their problems and escape the harsh realities of life. (thru gaming addiction or other addictions…) So maybe this is like a cautionary tale for us all. I’d say go see it if you have the time.

How did your summer break go?

kind of a DIY bracelet

I am so late to the party but better late than never right? In my case, I am quite late and slow on curating my Pandora charm bracelet!

As children my best friend and I admired bracelets be it chains, bangles, half chain but we had a soft spot specially for charm bracelets –those chunky and dangly ones that has some round bells on it always catches our eyes. We got ours right before college. We wore it for quite a while and then, it got lost and that was that.

By 2014 (I think) Joanna showed me her new charm bracelet acquisition. A Pandora bracelet was on her arm and she already had some charms on it. I wanted one of course! But I controlled myself by saying I cannot spend money for a new bracelet since my wedding is eating up all my funds.

Come late 2015, Joanna surprised me with a Pandora bracelet on my bridal shower. It also has a language of love charm on it too!

to the left: Language of love charm that came with the bracelet Jo gave me. Right: A two tone Bearhugs charm -the first charm given to me by Kei

Then after the wedding Kei got me the Bearhugs and family heritage charm. All of my Pandora stuff are treasured gifts!

I left it at that.

I did buy a charm to give though! (this was early 2016) I got Jo a Elsa Crown charm.

Elsa’s crown- from the Disney movie frozen

It reminds me of her (high school) uniform color that is blue, and fits with her being a December baby, and that it is a crown! So she got that added to her collection. Her bracelet has a blue/green theme to it that the Elsa crown fits in nicely.

So back to my collection. I wanted my bracelet to have a mix metal look. No glass. No color. Just all metals.

There was a charm that I really wanted though I cannot seem to find it. The Disney frozen snowflake charm. – It was exclusively sold in Disney parks, and we don’t have it here in the Philippines. I loved the geometric lines of the charm and I appreciate that it was kind of like a “special snowflake”, plus being born in winter also makes it a nice charm to have for me. So, thought I could find it from online sellers (this was on 2016), but I never did.

Last year (around the end of 2017) I really wanted to add something  to it and started looking for a safety chain. I have been indecisive as to get it or not since the charm was a bit pricey, so I went about looking for a pre-loved one –with a good “history” of course. The owner of the chain has her bracelet full of charms and wanted to free up some space to fit in one more charm. I mulled it over and went about my usual “window shopping” and still did not get any…It was Kei that got impatient and ended up getting the chain for me as part of my Christmas gift.

Upon looking a lot at the net I discovered that I can get a online shopper to find that elusive Disney frozen snowflake! But I have to wait for a month for it to arrive. I excitedly told Kei and Jo and they teamed up to get it for me. I am lucky, I know. I am going to have that snowflake by the end of January.

I just got the charm yesterday! -On the Blue blood moon day! And It was beautiful!

My bracelet is now most predominantly silver. So I am setting my sights to add a new metal to my bracelet to add variety. I wanted to get rose gold-because it is cheaper than the ridiculously priced gold charms. And I really, really like the color. I have set my sights on the shining path clip in rose gold. I wanted to get a pair, so my charms doesn’t slide around. (It is annoying when they do that.) And maybe a spacer or two? Any suggestions?

Update: I bit the gold bullet. I went to ask for a pair of custom made 14k gold spacers from my jeweler. I chose the design below as the inspiration. While mine won’t be legit Pandora, it is still 14k gold,  just more affordable for me – I can get it melted and re made into another trinket if I do get tired of it. *Will update once I get my hands on it.

month long

I already had my birthday but it seems like the weekends of January is a continuous month long celebration for me. I got gifts from my friends. Also got a lot of cakes. Two of those are very much special to me.

on the left Red Door Kitchen’s four flavor cake and Red Ribbon’s Tiramisu cake

Because one on the left was given to me by my cousin (who I don’t often get to see), and the one to the right was from my Care group friends! Both unexpected but so much welcome! For that I am thankful.

Kei also surprised me with a birthday dinner to this romantic restaurant named Ninyo that serves fusion cuisine and wine located in Loyola, QC. -By chef Nino Laus. It is one of Manila’s best kept (secret/s) restaurants, that has an intimate and cozy ambiance.

Our gazebo by the garden and the creme brulee that was given to me.

I did not get to take a lot of photos since it was already dark when we got there, sorry. (Just look at them up from the net) But take my word for it, their food was delicious! It was Filipino-Japanese-French fusion that was pleasing to the eyes and to the palate. Definitely recommended for anniversaries, birthdays and specially the upcoming valentine’s day!

Speaking of valentine’s day, this year it is so close to the Chinese New Year. Got anything planned already?

on to the holidays

I know I have been out for a while. There were quite a lot of holidays, then catching up on workloads, home decorating for the Christmas, getting my name changed, gaining a god daughter and doing early Christmas shopping to avoid the holiday rush. It’s been chaotic but very much productive.

We have also just finished hosting Friendsgiving & Games 2017. So, this is now a tradition in our home.

the potluck menu – everyone pitched in!

After lunch, the games are played. We have Taboo, King of Tokyo and Sushi go! It was hours of fun.

friendsgiving games

After that we shared something we are thankful about, and some more stories -the recent happening in our lives.
Like the last Friendsgiving, we only have a few photos. Well technically we only have one group photo and a solo shot of our good friend Matti.  (sorry, no posting as the photo is a group photo, and the solo photo is a solo photo- we do not have the rights ok?!)
Its officially December! Woot woot! Its on to the holidays for everyone!

And also Grateful

If you are feeling some December blues, or even depression, don’t fight it.
Instead, do something for yourself. Be reflective. Let the emotions exist.
And be encouraged that, like me, you can get to a better place, but it can take time. – Brad Feld

yey and nay

Kei managed to install the wall mirror in our dining area. Good and not so good… the upside is the space looks bigger, the bad is on some angles it reflects our messy kitchen as well as our makeshift clothesline (rainy season quick fix) in our laundry area. -We have to live with that for the meantime until we manage to decorate the area.

We really need to speed up getting our home a display cabinet – our Game of thrones Funko pop collection is taking over more than half of our living room wall, as well as “clean up” our mess-y area in the kitchen. – We are short on a proper display cabinet/kitchen storage/and too many small kitchen appliances for our tiny space. How to do that, I still don’t know. If our budget would allow, hopefully we can make these home improvements before the year ends.

our GOT funko pop collection as of the moment

*The GOT pop collection is still growing, they will have two more additions by the weekend.

Another good and not so good would be my fall beauty finds.

beauty-fall?!

I love, love, love the colors of my Colorpop After Hours super shock eye shadows. While I really love the scent of My Burberry edp -and it took me quite a long while to get one, my skin eats it up. So, i’m in the hunt for a fall fragrance.

contents of the colorpop after hours eye shadow kit

Back to the one I do love, the Colorpop After Hours super shock shadow kit is versatile! it can be used to create soft neutral effect or a dramatic look. It contains six beautiful colors namely: Super Hard Core (gold shade), DGAF (a rusty brown with lots of glitter), Wattles (beige pink), Amaze (peachy gold), Sailor (beige), Drift (cranberry red). I think it is perfect for creating the trending cranberry/maroon eye look for fall!- without being too much. Or leave the red shade (drift) for a more neutral look.

And because I like it very much I wanted to get more! So imagine my delight when I saw that Colorpop is having a buy 2 take 1 promo on their super shock shadows! -I googled reviews from Temptalia to look the the best ones to get, and composed a list. Only to be disappointed that when I was about to order, the promo has ended. Just my luck or maybe the universe is telling me to chill for a bit. Anyhow, till the next post!

May, that was fast

A lot has happened this month. I had a unexpected schedule change at work that kept me busy, hence the lack of posts.

Most of the month was spent catching up with friends and  family. Spent the first weekend with Kei’s siblings, bonding over guardians of the galaxy and okonomiyaki. The second, we were up to catch up with our good friend Tassha who we haven’t seen for more than a year! We catched up over Japanese dishes at Oedo. For the third week, it was being with a few of our office friends over coffee at Tim Horton’s. Then a whole day with Matti where we indulged in comfort food at Nono’s, Rodic’s tapa and our usual Starbucks merienda.

flavors of our month – the food we shared/enjoyed with the company of friends

Gardening updates: I finally acquired white marble pothos! – my golden photos now has a brother. Managed to get a rosal and make it bloom! -along with my sampaguitas, the flowers smell divine. And finally a small miracle… our silver lace fern that I thought was lost, came back! -hopefully the fern will stay for good.

Few more days and it will be June. Rain, rain, here we go!

*looking forward to the long weekends of June!
