a stupid thing I believed in when I was a kid

I always spend my summer vacations in an indoor pool near our home (Manila Downtown YMCA Binondo). Me and my best friend (also my childhood/neighbor) have a year round membership that we abuse every summer, we swim daily after having lunch. Come school days we swim on Saturdays.

Summer Days we will swim from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm everyday. Looking like a prune was something we found cool, smelling like chlorine is something we also love. (eww, I know) I also have my default swimming fashion, for some reason I always feel more grown-up when I wear black. Hence the all black swim gear.

Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly sometimes even a medley of those are pretty much the norm in a day. We even play our own pool games like tag or the “surfing”- the surfing is actually something we made up. We try to stand on a kickboard and hold on to the gutter for dear life. The kickboard tries to float, making standing up wobbly as hell your body should keep it stable or else the kickboard will slip and float to the surface and send you toppling over. Whoever stays standing on the kickboard wins. We also have another version of this sitting on the kickboard.

But that is not all that there is to our pool adventures.

We usually spot this “certain cool teen-aged girl” just because she always wears a bunch of silver charm bracelet to the pool.  the bracelet caught our attention. Being 9-year olds back then, we thought the charm bracelets (metal) would “sink” in the water and fall to the pool floor, and we (my best friend and I ) will have the liberty of getting one (for each of us) silver charm bracelet too. Back then our motto was ‘finders keepers’.

oooohhhh shiny! This looks like the charm bracelet we covet.

We earnestly searched every summer.

We found a lot of other stuff like: band aids, goggle straps, swim caps, a bra strap, hair pins, earplugs, shampoo etc. But we never did find anything of value in the pool floor.

But its okay. We developed strong lungs diving to the bottom of the pool. We had pretty awesome memories.

And we did get our happy ending: By the time we finished high school and our Mums got us our own charm bracelet.

A summer by the sea

Laiya, Batangas

I have always loved summer, simply because I love swimming. I have been swimming since I was a kid, but always on swimming pools and water parks. I have never been to the beach. Embarrassing I know.  But its true, for my 27 years on this planet I have never been to the beach, I have always wanted  to go see the waves and sand that I only see in pictures.

But this summer, Kei and I made a plan to go to the beach. after looking for nearby beaches/resorts online, we decided to go to  Laiya, Batangas.

From Manila to the city proper of Lipa, Batangas is around 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours away; depending on the time/season of visit.  From Lipa, we traveled for almost 2 hours  to arrive at Laiya, then another 30 or so minutes to the edge of the Laiya area where the beach strip is located.

There are a lot of beach resorts in the Laiya beach strip, and as luck would have it, we picked out the last beach in the Laiya strip! (talk about being remote!)

We set out from Manila at around 8:00 am and arrived at around 1:30 pm in the beach. The travel was tedious and sweaty! I am guessing it was one of the hottest summer days in the Philippines, but then again maybe I could be over reacting since I am usually enclosed in an air conditioned room. After a lot of complaining and hands that hurt from fanning to cool myself, we have arrived at the La Luz Beach Resort!

It was as I thought it was. Clear blue waters, waves, wind and warm sand. Paradise!

I was extremely happy to be on the beach!

We immediately went to eat lunch and headed to the shower to get changed. Applied some sunblock and off to the waters!

off to the waters!

off to the waters!

The water was cool and the sand was grainy, the waves are very much active,  the sloshing sounds felt very relaxing to my ears.  All I can think of was finally, finally! I get to experience being in the beach! I alternated on submerging myself in the water and lying around/sitting in the shoreline waiting for the waves to lap at my back.  At that moment, all the sweltering summer heat seemed alright for me.

Then we took some random beach photos to capture the experience.

After a while, we decided to walk around the beach and look for shells and sea glass to take home as keepsakes. Ventured out till the rocky part of the beach.

There were shells, but most of them were cracked, or too tiny. In the end I settled for these.

(But sadly I did not get to take home the green sea glass and the piece of coral. Some one must have picked it up when I left them in our cabana.)

We then bummed a bit before we prepared to leave.

As the lull of the waves calmed down and the day comes to a close, I was sad to say bye to the beach.

With sea salt in my stringy, windblown hair, we hurried back home.

So long for now, till we meet again.

The quest for the swimsuit figure…

Its officially Summer Season!

Time to hit the beach!

carefree summer days are here!

carefree summer days are here!

I love being in the water, swimming and soaking up the golden sun! However, I am a bit reluctant to don a swimsuit because I have a tummy pooch.

Just like any other girl, I have my own share of  body insecurities.

I am petite, sort of chubby but within the normal size, flat chested girl. How do I rock a swimsuit that would make me look sexy?! (look slimmer, have bigger looking bumpers, basically a better version of my body)

I see a lot of my Facebook friends who are posting their “swimsuit figure” photo and I want one too!

I always wore conservative swimwear when I am going out for a swim, but this time I wanted to have my own “bragging-rights-swimsuit-figure” picture of myself in swimwear. what to do now? I am still iffy on the idea of all my flaws being seen by others, and yet I so desperately want to have my own sexy swimwear photo! I mean, I must do it now! because as time passes, I will be too old and it will be too tacky to take a beach photo! whats a girl to do?!!!

I am a lazy girl and I don’t want to exercise or diet. But I still want a swimsuit figure…

I must figure out the magic trick.

so, I went out in search of my magic formula, and my magic swimwear.

And found one. After a lot of trials and ill fitting, too tight and too loose swimsuits, I managed to get my own piece of “Magic” swimwear.

In finding a perfect fit, you have to understand your body shape. and your assets and flaws.

So, here is a chart to help you determine your body shape.

Once you find your body shape, take to account what your assets and flaws are to better help you in your quest for the “magic” swimsuit .

highlight the assets, and hide the flaws.

Here are the tips and tricks for each body type.

Turns out I have a pear shape body!

In the quest  for a “sexy beach body” I got myself a bikini! Yes, a bikini!

My petite 32-26-34  body will rock a bikini this summer! Yey! excited much!

I also looked for a flattering color for my pale yellow-ish, freckled, asian skin tone. And went with a bright fuchsia/dark charcoal to highlight my skin tone.

I got a padded cup bandeau, and high cut legs! makes me look like I have a rack (thanks to the padded top) and look taller (thanks to the high cut bottom).

Turns out shopping for a swimsuit can be so much easier when you know what you are looking for!

Now I just need to find a cover-up, a cute summer dress, and a pair of flip flops to complete my summer look!

^that would be really easy now that I figured out my main summer swimwear!

I’m ready for summer!
