Cure for the blues: Bunny Baker Café and cake studio

We had a really bad week. How bad? Kei got mugged on his way to work. I have a nitpicking client that seems to want more and more freebies. Our weekend plans were cancelled, the red gown I had made turned out to be blue. To top it all off the rain has to pour.

Cue music: Why does it always rain on me? by Travis that would be my anthem for 2014.

But we got an invite from our friends (Kenzei and Aila) café and cake studio soft opening. We had that going for us which is nice.

So we braved the drizzly morning to be greeted by this.

cuteness!

cheery cute!

We are welcomed and seated on really cute pink bunny chairs! That was designed and customized specially for bunny baker! Their interiors is really cheerful, cozy and very well thought of, I really liked the stars on the ceiling. It reminds me of glow in the dark stickers.

Upon closer look on their display, they have different flavors of really cute cupcakes and gelato!

But not to forget, the Bunny baker is well-known for their very detailed and whimsical fondant cake creations.

kids cakes

Those cakes are created by the (bunny baker owners) husband and wife team, Aila (wife) doing the cakes and Kenzei (husband) in charge of sculpting the fondant. What started out as a hobby, and then turned into a home operation is now a cake shop. They also do wedding cakes, cupcakes, macarons and set-up for events.

See the level of detail on this pink Chinese lion fondant cake?

Awesome right?

While I was busy taking pictures, Kei took the liberty of ordering a light lunch. We got creamy pesto pasta, spam fries and ceasar salad. For drinks we have pink lemonade.

We love the creamy pesto and fought for the last piece of spam fries! It’s good.

For dessert I got a royal blush cupcake (red velvet with nutella frosting) and Kei got a scoop of okinawa (milk tea flavored) gelato.

sweets

Despite the continuous rain outside, we left the place feeling brighter.

Thanks for having us over Kenzei & Aila! We will be back soon!

thankful saturday

*My thankful friday will temporarily be moved to saturday to give way to Filipino Friday.

Yey for another week done! And double hooray for the long weekend!

(well, at least for us in the Philippines, while I still have to got to work on the holiday, I am still pretty much thrilled for the weekend!)

thankful

1.) A long weekend to catch up with friends. Kei and I (plus the all the gamer friends) got an invite to a birthday/game day/food and wine tasting night at our friend’s place.

2.) Looking forward to my not-so-little brother’s birthday.  To me, you will always be the special. I promise to buy you ice cream on that day. I am really thankful to have you as my brother.

3.) The new additions to my closet. More shoes and dresses!

izakaya, cronut, shoes

4.) My office mates’ generosity. From random sharing of food, to advance/rushing things to get the work done, shuttling to and from venues, getting me a skirt to wear for a event on the last minute… you guys are awesome.

5.) The work day/holiday on Tuesday Oct. 15. After work, its Izakaya night!  woot woot!

This past weekend was glorious. Mainly because of the glorious food.

I was craving for Shakey’s mojos last Saturday after work, I headed straight to meet Kei for a  hearty lunch. As expected, we ate a lot . We had a platter of mojos, a whole pizza, soda and carbonara. It was bliss.

Till the clouds turned to rain and it flooded the entire Metro Manila.  That we had to wade through flood waters to bring me home. Icky stuff. By dinner, Mum and Dad brought home take-outs. It is saturday and it is takeout day at home.  Dig in to a huge plate of fried rice, barbecue and noodles and a glass of soda.

Next morning, after church and baptismal class. Kei and I celebrated our 23rd month. (one month to go and we are already 2 years together!) We thought it would be nice to eat crabs at The Red Crab for lunch. A king crab it was, we barely even touched our rice. That crab maritess was good.

Come dinner time, I am off to meet my mother’s side cousins as it was my Grandma’s birthday. We went to IMC Kavino at Jupiter Makati for a Cantonese dinner. The food was so good and Chef Kavino is very friendly! Again I ate a lot till I cannot eat anymore. A weekend of eats. I feel guilty.

I talked to my cousins, they are really slim. (I am the odd/fatty one) and they actually recommended a diet for me.

As of the moment, I have just started reading the book they gave me. It is the Renegade Diet by Jason Ferruggia.

I am really curious to try this out.

the movie marathon weekend

This weekend was exceptional.

1.) I sort of  “sorted out things” with my best friend.

2.) Drank wine with the family to kick start the weekend. (My 18 year old sister brought a bottle of wine and proceeded to pour everyone a cup. Our family doesn’t really drink, but weirdly enough my parents were okay with this, and drank with us. )

3.) Movie marathon. (Usually I watch one movie per weekend. This time I watched 3: Despicable Me 2, Pacific Rim and Confessions-from the Eiga-Sai festival.)

4.) I get to go to the first study session of my Baptismal Class.

5.) I got a 50% off dress from Dorothy Perkins. It was a blue/white chinoiserie print dress I saw from a window display a month ago! In my size! (I don’t really get to buy dresses on this brand as most of the dresses are a bit big, have huge armholes, too low necklines or the length is too short. )

6.) The Heat is on! The church SSP-Zion Caregroup  friends finally clamped down a dinner reservation at Shangri-La Ortigas buffet restaurant Heat.

I just hope this work week will be smooth sailing, as we are having a rough time at work lately…

*I really think everyone should go watch Pacific Rim. I find it awesome.

Time for my afternoon tea

While I love my coffee, I am also a tea drinker.

There are now a lot of TWG branches in the Philippines, and I have been to two of them Greenbelt and Newport City (Resorts World Manila).

*Not to be confused with Twinnings, another tea company. TWG  tea stands for The Wellness Group, and this luxury tea company “is a luxury concept that incorporates an international distribution network to professionals, unique and original retail outlets and exquisite tea rooms”. TWG originated from Singapore.

Fancy, lovely and very English! They have very luxurious uniformed look in all of their stores.

My first TWG visit was on Dec 2012 , and have been coming back once in a while.  I love their macaroons!

They also serve cake.

Their tea boutique is also quite a colorful eye candy!

Usually we go for the tea time set (Chic-Royal set), since it is a little bit of everything with the option to add more If you like. The one we chose consists of a pot of tea, sandwiches (- Prawn with Silver Moon Tea infused cream, Smoked salmon with Mascarpone and chives, Roma tomato and Moroccan Mint Tea infused sauce) and scones. *but we opted to add another tea pot.*

And added macaroons. (50php per piece) My favorite is the Napoleon tea & Caramel.

Their prices really reflect “couture” tea.

The extensive tea list

But they make up for it with their luxurious  ambiance, the place is  good for dates, bonding moments with friends and family. Just don’t come here in a hungry mode as there is a waiting list (on peak hours), the service can be slow, staff is friendly and knowledgeable about tea.

Visiting Solaire

A lot of people have been talking about the newly opened resort/casino, and with all the advertisements on TV, I have a severe last song syndrome and has been humming their song Brighter than the sun-by Colbie Caillat over and over.

I am curious and so is Kei. We decided to check it out if it lives up to its hype.

We arrived early and was impressed with the place. Everything screams opulence.

I am in awe with all the huge-ass chandeliers all over.

Sorry, I cant help it. I have a thing for chandeliers.

Then I saw these colorful looking plants near the gaming area.

Nestled on the far side of the gaming area is a food court. I think this is very considerate of them! Placing budget friendly food for everyone to enjoy.

We strolled along and stopped by Dragon Bar.

Feeling a bit hungry, we then proceeded to look at their restaurants.

Since we both share a love for pasta, we looked at Finestra, their Italian restaurant.

Finestra would be really nice for a romantic dinner date!

We then snapped a picture from the restaurant across, Red lantern. It serves Chinese cuisine.

But we were not really in the mood for Chinese cuisine that day so we moved along.

Next up was Strip. too bad it was closed.

They also have a Japanese Restaurant named Yakumi.

Since we normally eat Japanese dishes, we decided to skip this too.

Walked some more and then chose to eat at Fresh- their casual dining buffet. Since we are huge fans of buffets we thought we might as well try this one.

Given the space, It can actually accommodate many people.  But, they are very strict about seating. We choose to seat “inside”, but was requested to take the seats close “outside” to the gaming area (read: stinks of cigarette smoke, and far from the buffet table). I was like really? can’t we just stay inside?

To sort of give you an idea…

Disregard the hydrangeas, look to the left, that is where we are seated. Look to the right, there it is, the gaming area.

Only a half a strip of glass away we would look like we were dining alfresco, because it is beside the hallway, where a lot of people are passing by.

Since there are only two of us, we could pretty much do nothing about it.  So much for the seating, off to eat.

Fresh is actually reasonably priced, but I don’t see anything special, nothing unique. I was actually expecting the food to be delicious, but it was only so-so. I was very disappointed with their Chinese and Japanese stations. The soup that we had (hot and sour soup) tasted nothing like a hot and sour soup. I am Chinese, I know how that soup should taste like. The Japanese section is so limited and generic. I skipped it.

Then we went to get  ourselves the Solaire card. It looks like this. (sorry for the photo, this was taken with my mobile phone)

Then went on to play.

We didn’t have any other photos of the gaming area/machines since picture taking on the gaming areas were prohibited. Had a fun time playing with the slots even if we really don’t know how to play.
