winter came

Our favorite series is back! I watched Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere last night and I cannot wait for the next episode!!! excited much?!

So, I will not spoil the show in case you haven’t seen it yet.  I am here to update my Game of Thrones Funko Pop collection.

My GOT pop wishlist! -only a few more.

Right before the season 7 premiere, Kei and I went on a pop haul in Greenhills. Getting 4 pops in one go. We have Night King, Grey Worm, Margaery Tyrell, and Stannis Baratheon. We took the chance to buy now before the price shoots up.

our haul!

Well technically we got 5, four GOT pops and a freebie. We got a Marvel pop as the freebie- a Yellow jacket to be with our Ant man.

The feeling when looking for new Pops -Looking to the east, looking to the west, looking to the south, looking to the north… We will find the Pops. *A parody on Cersei’s  “Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, Enemies to the south, enemies to the north. Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it.”*

We saw Tywin Lannister but it was priced at 750php so that could wait. Petyr Baelish was nowhere to be found.

I have 2 pops (Tormund Giantsbane- to pair with my Brienne of Tarth, and Cersei Lannister- the one with the crown) on pre-order from my cousin Jacky in the US. Pretty excited for these two.

Still wishing that they create a new version of Sansa Stark in the new garb!

calling Funko! please create a (red head/badass) Sansa Stark pop!

Still looking for a decently priced Joffrey Baratheon and Ned Stark though. Any leads?

some ee-kay-uh stuff

I said on a earlier post that there is no Ikea to be found, and that I sort of wish that they were available in the Philippines. I take that back.

There is a store that sells Ikea products in the Philippines. That we accidentally found out through our good friend Bart.

Earlier this week Bart phoned us and told us that she is going furniture hunting and asked us if we wanted to come with her. She is off to hunt for a couch that she has been eyeing for a while now. Bart is quite savvy when it comes to home furnishings and we are always happy to go with her on home furnishing hunts. We always learn something new.  So we readily agreed to go.

This couch is the reason for our trip.

the couch we are hunting for: fred leighton couch

Pretty right? But wait till you get to know how the couch works.

transforming couch. cool.

transforming couch. smart. -photo from Furniture source’s FB page

The two/three seater couch transforms into a five seater. Then a bed. Amazeballs.

So off we go and found it easily on Furniture Source.

IMG_20160724_153026

we went to the furniture source

But we waited for more than 45 mins to be entertained and another 20 or more mins to check color availability and order. Service was slow and could be improved. Bart got the couch in the lightest grey color.

the exact couch we were looking for. -photo from furniture source's fb page

We waited for a long time. Since it is a furniture store with a lot of people it sure is cramped in there.

But it was ok-ish because we got it on sale.

So while waiting Kei and I looked around and saw this shoe cabinet. We thought it is perfect for our home-because it is compact and can fit in the space behind the door. (To hide our shoes and maximize our floor space.)

Aesthetically pleasing shoe cabinet! -Ikea Bissa

We got the 3 layer one in brown. Thankfully on sale too.

Even with the cramped space and slow service, we have to admit that their furniture (all Ikea) are perfect for the modern home. – having a large space is a luxury now, so we all need smaller furniture that also “multitask” and save up precious space.

Kei and I also looked at their bookshelves but in the end opted not to buy ready made but get one custom built. *space constraints and preference issues*

So now we all wait for the delivery.

We will sure be back! I had my eye on some lighting fixtures and cabinets they have.

Hopefully we get faster service by then.

*Also, we all kept on saying “eye-kee-ah” but apparently we are all wrong. It is pronounced as “ee-kay-uh.” Just found that out after we brought the items and googled it at home.

sigh, Philippines only

Sometimes, I have only one explanation for the sad incidents in life… I live in the Philippines.

Like collecting toys. -because this is our current thing. *We are back at Greenhills yesterday. Going on a toy hunt.* And because its the GOT season finale, I will be all GOT themed today. But not to worry, I wont spoil anything. I will be using the #battleofthebastards episode to illustrate.

please explain why?

please explain why?

I wanted to get more Game of Thrones Funko Pops, but it looks like we are not meant to be. *sobs*

Couldn’t bring myself to buy it because of the price. I believe its unreasonable.

See the huge Difference? Sure, I get the Samuel Tarly price: $9.99 I round it off to $10 then convert it to peso lets say x55 (a dollar is around close to 50php I just added a bit extra) plus some 40php for taxes and upkeep and profit for the shop. I see that the 595php price is reasonable.

But the Brienne price: Oh wow. they sure jacked up that one.

I even looked it up on www.poppriceguide.com and it currently stands at 12usd (as of 06-27-16) so if that is the case 12usd to php is 564.59. But lets just use the x55 conversion ok? so 12×55 = 660 then add some 40php (for taxes and upkeep and profit for the shop, like what we did with Samuel-that would have to be at 700php. But they sell if for 750php.  If only I can directly buy from the US. *sigh*

Just not our day for toy hunting.

Sad but that’s it. So, after looking around for toys we need to go home.

That got me thinking about commuting – in other countries commuting is relatively easy compared to the Philippines. Here we have #gameoftrains.

All photos are not mine, just got them from the internet.

Queuing for a train ticket can take you anywhere from 15 mins to 1-2 hours. Then you still have to wait at the platform.

this is a daily occurrence -having stored value/beep card = express lane.

You get to ride the train with a lot of other passengers and squeeze yourself in.

when the door of the train is closing

the situation when the door of the train is closing and the train is so full you have to squeeze yourself in amidst all the pushing/shoving people

You get mashed up into a human pile that it maybe possible that one day you get to swap faces with other commuters. #truth

human sardine

It really does feel like that. But we also have a separate train for female passengers. So travel on your own and see you at the station ok? *the female train is no better than the other trains. Its still crowded as hell inside, only bonus for a female is that you are all females so no groping issues.

Translation: Brother, I will go ride on the train for females. Let's just meet up at the station. Punyeta (offensive) = go to hell

This is a accurate depiction of commuting in the philippines. #thestruggleisreal

starting the journey fresh and alighting the train looking like hell

And of course. Keep your eyes peeled for the hold-up-pers. There sure are a lot of them here in the Philippines. And the police/government cant do anything to stop these crimes happening daily.

beware of those wielding sharp pointed objects.

beware of those wielding sharp pointed objects and concealing their faces = its a trap!

Its every one for themselves.

you have to be brave to venture outside

you have to be brave to venture outside

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

There is also the jeep, bus and riding the FX or shuttle, but even that does not exempt you from the perils above. You will not have to fall in line and wait at the platform.-hooray! But you will be crammed along with a lot of passengers that you are half sitting-half squatting, sweaty and cramped for space. Subjected to traffic and the occasional thieves and  holdup-ers. Again the police/government cant do anything to stop these crimes happening daily.

Add the meager salary for all the professionals, poor healthcare, poor education, all the corruption issues… etc. Its a perfect setting for a mission impossible living conditions.

burn all the injustice

burn all the injustice

I could go on and on about how sad it is to live in the Philippines but, its the hand I was dealt with. *Sigh* No wonder a lot of Filipinos choose to migrate to other countries.

Its more fun in the Philippines.

our toys multiplied by themselves

I will be honest. I used to look at Kei’s toys with disdain, I believe (till now) that he has too many toys. His former bedroom looks a lot like Densha Otoko’s bedroom. No joke.

a lot like this

this is Densha Otoko’s bedroom -photo from google

Lots and lots of toys, robots, anime posters, a pc that is always open, plushies, a board of keychains…basically, total geek territory. I kind of freaked out the first time I saw his room.

Over time, I got to know some of his favorite toys. I even gave Kei a Donatello from Ninja Turtles that was his childhood frustration. I’d safely say that while I was not a fan of his toys, I respect that those were things he likes. He even gave me a few toys that he thought I would like. Like the Gloomy Pink Bunny plushie and a Castellappy from Poteusa Loppy. They are both brought from an Anime Convention and their origins are Japanese. I love both plushies.

Me and my (Castellappy) poteusa loppy plushie

Me and my huge (Castellappy) poteusa loppy plushie

Kei attended a anime con (before we got married) and gave me a Daenerys Targaryen funko pop keychain, and got himself a Jon Snow one. They were cute and we are huge fans of Game of Thrones. I appreciated the keychain. More so, because of Kei’s reason for buying a keychain and not a full sized funko pop, he said he wanted to get toys but he thought that it’s better to appropriate most of his funds for our upcoming wedding (back then). I thought of it as our his and hers keychain.

we have these!

we have these! -Now, if only I can find a Full sized wedding dress Daenerys.

Fast forward to present, we do not have toys at home. Our house looks pretty basic.

But that is about to change. A few Sundays ago, we went out for a stroll in Greenhills and I chanced upon a Funko Pop figure that I wanted to get for Kei. *I have plans for the funko pop as Kei’s cake topper… shhh dont tell Kei.* It’s a Game of Thrones – Jon Snow. We are both fans of Game of Thrones and that is Kei’s favorite character in GOT. So, I thought I will buy it right before we get home so we would not have to carry it the whole day. WRONG! Newbie mistake.

The time I went to buy the toy, it was already brought by someone else! I was surprised and I went to look for it on other stores. Apparently, It is pretty rare as it was released quite a while already-its usually sold out on the stores we asked from and they did not know if they are going to get more. Its kind of understandable that the price of this certain pop has gone up than the common Funkos. Arrrrgggghh! I know I had to find it and buy it.

So while going around looking for Jon Snow, I chanced upon a pre-order of Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon. I quickly signed up for it. Daenerys is my favorite character from GOT. Since I can’t find the wedding dress Daenerys that was another rare toy, I thought I go grab a pre-order one instead. Plus it has a badass dragon! This pop is pricier and understandably so, since it is bigger and a two in one kind of pop.  So I ordered one. –Flying in by mid July.

Looking pretty badass! Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon

Looking pretty badass! Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon * while I cant find the Daenerys in white dress funko, this is a good alternative. *

So we patiently asked around all the toy stores in the vicinity till we finally found and bought the Jon Snow pop. It was the last piece left on the store we brought it from.

This is the Jon Snow I like... the one with the cape and sword. Lord Commander.

This is the Jon Snow I like… the one with the cape and sword. Lord Commander Jon Snow. I dislike the newer castle black version and the exclusive one with blood on the face, even if those are more expensive.

I like my Jon Snow with a cape. Looks more majestic IMHO.

We actually got it for a cheaper price that the first Jon Snow I found. To clarify, it was the same Jon Snow. Hooray!!!

Once I got home I googled other Game of Thrones toys and holy smokes! I am in love with a toy chair. The Iron Throne Funko Pop, only problem was, it was a New York Comic Con exclusive and I am from the other side of the world. Max fail.

*please play Adelle’s hello from the other side song here*

I quickly asked Kei and He managed to find a seller. Right that day we called the seller and asked him to put the Iron Throne on hold, we are getting it by the weekend. We tried to haggle but its price is fixed. This one is even more expensive than the Daenerys and Drogon Pop. But still I wanted the Iron Throne so we can sit Jon Snow in it. Shallow reason but we really dig it. So we went to meet the seller – they are a couple too!, who then became our friends (We chatted for quite a while! I was actually blown away by how nice geeks are to other geeks and how we could talk like we have known them for a long time now. And I mean than in the most respectful kind of way. Seriously, Geeks rule!) and that was the story on how we got to take home the  iron throne.

they are all fighting for this seat

All mine. The seat they are all fighting for! Hahahaha!

Finally I have them both! I excitedly posted a snap on fb. Then went on to join the Funko Funatic Philippines, I sure am a fledgling geek.

my first two funko pops.

my first two funko pops.

And so I proceed with my plan to seat Jon Snow in the iron throne…

looking chill Lord Commander.

looking chill Lord Commander.

In my excitement, I opened up the toys and proceeded to play with the toys and posted a snap on fb. A few minutes later, I got a message from my cousin Jackie from USA. Apparently she collects Funkos too!

And she has a stash with a lot of exclusives that most collectors would envy.

More than Funkos, she also collected Dorbs and Tsum tsums as well as Legos. It was diverse and all cute as hell!

She asked me that if we are looking for a certain pop that is hard to find in the Philippines, she can help us look for it from the states. I was so excited! She can order from all those web sites that I only hear about when I watch Youtube reviews. *play the hello from the other side song again*

I really don’t have anything GOT related in mind as the one I really wanted (GOT Daenerys Targaryen wedding dress) is already vaulted- it is also very much overpriced.  I wouldnt want to bother my cousin too much. So, I opted to ask for a Loki. *Kei has a bobblehead Thor that was given to him a long time ago, I thought we could get Loki so Thor wouldn’t feel so alone.*

what I asked for: Loki so that our Thor would have a companion

what I asked for: Loki so that our Thor would have a companion

Then my cousin showed me a exclusive Iron man unmasked bobble head and I went WOW. I have a soft spot for Iron man. After a few more messages sent back and forth, She is ordering another Iron man (like the one she has) for me. I was jumping up and down like mad.

I envied my cousin because she had this Ironman pop. She is getting me one too! Squee!

I envied my cousin because she had this Ironman pop. Now, she is getting me one too! Squee!

Didn’t know that I would have this kind of strong feelings toward toy/s. Kei was pleasantly surprised. So begins my own collection of toys. Planning on GOT and Avengers that Kei and I are quite fond of.

I sort of get it (toy collecting) now.

You get a toy, and you get more toys so your (original) toy wont be sad. My toys are now happy and only my wallet is sad.

omakase

So, we got creamed by typhoon Mario, to lift up our sunken spirits we are looking for our comfort food/s. Specifically something Japanese.

It is no secret that Kei and I are huge fans of Japanese cuisine.

The food haunt I am about to share is also no secret. In fact it is very famous for its makimono.

I am talking about Omakase. This restaurant has a huge following and you have to wait to be served. But, we don’t mind.

We have kept frequenting the place.

10532371_10152178501437967_4449023864169747838_n

Omakase (お任せ o-makase?) is a Japanese phrase that means “I’ll leave it to you”. (It is rooted from the Japanese “to entrust” (任せる makaseru?)). Usually used at Sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef.  Ordering omakase can be a gamble; however, the customer typically receives the highest-quality fish in stock at a less expensive cost than if it had been ordered à la carte. (Learned all about that from Wikipedia)

Omakase’s Makimono is not exactly authentic as they put their own twist to it. It would be safe to say that they serve Japanese fusion cuisine. For this restaurant, We would happily say “omakase” and  leave the selection to them!  But we have our favorites of course.

Here is a peek of their choices of their famous makimono.

this will give you a hard time choosing what you like to order.

this will give you a hard time choosing what you like to order.

We really took time to look at their selections as we liked most of them!

Their interiors are minimalist inspired and accented by cute kokeshi dolls.

We usually arrive here to get lunch, so there is a lot of people and we can’t really take a lot of photos. Sorry.

On the next, we had a chicken bento, zigzag roll ( Softshell crab, tempura with Japanese-mayo-chili oil dressing) , gyoza and their omakase soup (wakame, kani, eggdrop soup).

round two

*I just realized we never got desserts here because we tend to over-eat!

Eating here definitely brightened our day! Comfort food indeed.

  • Better to come early. Or repeat after me: waiting is worth it.

Kamicos

We love tacos.

And we like it cheap, so we can have more!

Kei introduced me to Greenhills and subsequently Kamicos two years ago, after the said introduction; I never go to Greenhills without getting a taco.  Their stall looks old, small but usually packed. A number of shoppers are usually having their snack here. That being said, you have to patiently wait for a seat or eat standing up.

But they do have good tacos.

They also serve nachos, quesadillas, wraps, pasta… etc. See theire menu here.

So, we wait for our turn.

kamicos

while waiting for our food

Our usual order consists of two crispy spicy beef tacos (68php each) and a glass of lemonade for each of us. But, by the time we are on the front of the line, the crispy taco shells are sold out. We are left with soft tacos or no tacos at all, said the grumpy lady of the stall.

So we pored over their menu and noticed the “Food Trip” bundles. These  taco/nacho bundles comes with a pitcher of iced tea.

We got the food trip 3 bundle. That consists of 2 soft tacos, 1 pitcher of iced tea that we requested to be changed to lemonade, and a plate of nachos. (For the price of 540php.)

pam and kei's meal

We were served the pitcher of lemonade first, and we had to wait for a while to get our tacos/nachos. By the time our nachos arrived, out lemonade is almost empty.

But oh well, we just get bottled water to go with the spicy beef tacos.

  • Mataray, masungit, suplada are adjectives usually used at the lady of the shop. Doesn’t smile at all, not a drop of friendliness there. #truth
  • Their “food trip” bundles are better than buying their food item separately.
  • The food can take a while, as well as clearing up the table. Poor service but cheap food.

sixpence in my shoe

Kei and I were out for our usual weekend stroll at Greenhills when we found ourselves in a rather odd and very much interesting booth. This certain booth at the furniture area sells coins of different values and origin.

tito jun

That gave us the idea…we could get our wedding arrhae (las arras/unity coins) here!

It would be cool to have coins from different countries we like to visit as our set!

We quickly looked/picked up the coins placed in the huge wooden bowl (seen on top of the for sale signage on the photo above) and after a while Kei chose these coins. We then paid for them.

coins

while placing our coins in a plastic bag the shopkeeper told us one of the coins we got is a unique find.

It is the Susan B Anthony dollar. (bottom right)

Apparently Kei knows that the certain coin in question is a unique find, that started a fifteen minute conversation about coins that I know nothing about. (Extremely proud of Kei and I am a maximum fail on this one.) The shopkeeper even asked us is we were coin collectors too. (not really)

I then asked the shopkeeper for a sixpence (for my shoe). He said he doesn’t really sell them as those were his personal collection. (bummer) We learned that he is named Jun, is a coin collector and only keeps the shop to meet fellow collectors and further his hobby, he really doesn’t gain much from selling the said coins.

He then asked if we were planning to get married and those coins we got from him will be our arrhae, we said yes. (are we that obvious?) And he looked around from the albums of his own collection and said he indeed has the sixpence, and will sell one to us. (hooray!)  In British or Australian currency. We really wanted the British sixpence but it looks really old and dull. So, Tito Jun* suggested we get the Australian sixpence. -*we call him tito/uncle, as respect to an elder.

our sixpence

our shiny sixpence with a kangaroo and emu

And Tito Jun even taught us how to attach it to the shoe!

Currently we have 5 coins from Tito Jun’s shop, one Japanese coin from Kei’s brother in Japan. My best friend Joanna offered to give us one from Hong Kong. That makes it 7 coins in our collection.

We need to get 13 coins though. So, 6 more coins to go!

Now where to find my Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?…

Luckily I now have a sixpence in my shoe!

Tito Jun’s Coin Booth is located at Greenhills Shopping Center, second floor in the furniture area.  If you managed to drop by the area take a look at his coin collection, you might find something you like.
